Thank you for your lovely comment, too. I do understand your "pathos at a distance." Yes, the "distancing and keeping down" are to be found in middle America as well...ours in the form of materialism and complacent ignorance.

I think your portrait work exquisite. No matter how distant an adult, you're able to express depth and mood quite successfully, as seen in your portraits.
